Café In Berlin is really one story broken into ten chapters, rather than ten short stories, as the subtitle says. I am a mid 40's male attempting to relearn and expand my high school German. Along with some audio language programs, I've found Andre Klein's various titles and this one I like the best. It's mostly present tense, and written in a simple first person narrator point of view. HIs Sicilian character tells you all you need to know about being a foreigner in modern Berlin, trying to learn the language, fit in, have a good time, get a job and meet some girls. It's not stretching any literary boundaries, but there is some humor tucked into the story. Vocabulary is simple, his end of chapter translations of key vocab are good checkpoints, and he has a knack for storytelling. For me, it all added up to a great reading experience, not taxing, not frustrating, just enough of a challenge. Everyone's experience will vary according to their mastery of the language, naturally, so I think it would be impossible to call it a one size fits all book. But if you're wanting a no sweat simple piece to test your abilities, I don't think you can wrong here.

I have this on the Kindle. I was pleased at how the author had selected a sufficiently constrained vocabulary that I was able to understand almost everything.Reading on the Kindle with a German dictionary installed makes it easy to look things up as you need, but a surprising amount becomes clear either from context, or from simply looking at the text. Many initially strange words turn out to be compound words which are understandable.I have at best an A1 level of understanding, and the text worked for me.

Fun read that is perfect for beginners learning German. Intermediate and advanced learners may find it too easy and the story too simple. For someone learning German, it is refreshing to be able to read something other than a children's book. It will help you learn new vocabulary words and some German slang as well. You will also learn about different cities in Germany; it's especially interesting if you have visited these cities already, as it will bring back memories of your travels. I prefer the kindle version. I recommend that you download an English/German dictionary to your kindle as well. If you don't know a word, you can just click on it to get the definition instead of clicking back and forth to the dictionary at the end of each chapter.

This book fit my needs perfectly. The stories are simple, but reasonably interesting. The vocabulary was generally down the middle of the fairway for my level of skill - which is hard to describe, but consists of a year of college German 40 years ago, a couple years of community ed spoken language classes 30 years ago and off-and-on self study, largely for reading comprehension purposes, the past few years. The text is in one sense "over-glossed" - more definitions are provided than I need (I needed maybe 10% of them). But I still found that helpful, partly as a matter of review of something I should have known or once knew and forgot, but also on the basis that my "10%" might be different that someone else's. I also liked what I thought to be a high proportion of idiomatic usages, or even slang, in a loose sense of the word, as a result of the stories being mostly dialogue and only a minority of narrative passages. New (glossed) words are with high frequency used in dialogues where you have a good probability of making a decent guess of the meaning (just we all did when first learning to read English). Also, the author appears to me to make good use of compound words where the components, or portions of them, might be familiar, but the combination takes a moment or a little bit of thought to sink in (an example for me, although not from this particular volume, is "Rastahaar" = dreads). I used the book coupled with a Kindle German dictionary and that also helped fill in the few gaps that I encountered. I also liked the relative brevity of the stories - there are 10 in the book and they are only a few pages long - providing an opportunity for multiple reads to help cement any new vocabulary without getting too bored or frustrated with slogging through a long story or passage. The author throws in a few facts of local geography, history, etc., just enough for flavoring but not turning it overly didactic. New words and phrases also re-pop up in later stories, sometimes glossed and sometimes not, but good for learning. I have now moved on to other books in this series and have similar positive experiences with them. For me, this series hits the Goldilocks standard - "just right". And the price is very modest.

Improving one's reading proficiency in a foreign language can be tedious if it requires looking up words in a dictionary, even online. One solution is a bilingual book, of which there are now some good examples, like Alice in Wonderland with sentences or phrases alternating between German and English. This book takes a different approach, also successful, in my opinion. It contains ten short chapters, each entirely in German. But harder words and phrases are in bold face and are translated at the end of each chapter. The story is entertaining, about a young man from Sicily living in Berlin with three roommates from different countries, and one can usually guess the meaning from context. I found that I absorbed new words without great effort. The level of German reading ability targeted is probably low intermediate.
